Beautiful Kilim

March 07, 2014

Marhaban!!!  Or g'day in Arabic.

Today it's all about Kilim rugs. These are our latest offerings from Turkey and they are simply beautiful. These kilims are tapestry-woven and made completely from wool using natural dyes. The colours are rich and vibrant and the patterns consist of large geometric shapes, triangles and zig-zags.

Kilim rugs have an ancient and fascinating history. The word Kilim means to spread roughly and they were originally made by nomadic tribes in Central Asia, who applied the weaving techniques they used in their tent-making, to make the kilims that served as floor coverings.  But that wasn't all. The nomads used kilims for their bedding, saddle covers, and even cradles for their babies. The rug-making tradition seemed to really take off in the Anatolian region of Turkey, and today, it remains the most renowned Kilim-making region in the world.

Today, these traditional rugs are making a comeback using colour and design to suit modern homes. They are perfect to enhance the look of the timber floors that so many of us have in our homes these days. And more and more we are seeing them hung on walls as display pieces. However you choose to use them, these gorgeous Kilims are going to  brighten any space in your home.

Salam Alikum.....peace be upon you!!!!

When thinking about home interiors, like me, you might cringe at the memory of your childhood home. The best version of our family home was new green carpet and a black high-backed vinyl lounge with orange nylon-cushioned seating. My mother was proud of her modern choices and teamed up the “mod look” with a teak extender dining table and a sliding-door settee. The bright green kitchen cupboards and red laminex kitchen table and chairs were all part of the ‘70’s look.

NORTH FACING HOME
NORTH FACING HOME

January 30, 2019

When we married and had our first child, forty years ago, our search began in earnest, for a home; somewhere to raise our family. In those days, it wasn’t unusual to seek out houses for sale in the classified adds of the Sydney newspaper. And that was how we came across our first home. Situated at the bottom of a hill, looking north over the southern headland of Coogee, we loved it the minute we saw it. It wasn’t grand, with one and a half bedrooms and a tiny kitchen and bathroom, but it was perfect for us.  And I remember thinking that I would never again wish for anything more in my life. Well, that noble thought didn’t last long, because over the next five years two more babies came along and we needed more rooms, more space.
